Bodybuilder Kiran Dembla didn’t give up after the wedding

Coming from a humble Sindhi background, Dembla succeeded in a very unconventional space for women in India. She is a world famous bodybuilding champion and now she is also a celebrity fitness trainer like Taapsee Pannu, SS Rajamouli, Prabhas and others. While the brave mother of two is celebrated for her accomplishments today, life hasn’t always been this easy. Choosing the less traveled path has often pitted Dembla against patriarchal configurations and discordant sexism, which plagues our country.

Dembla’s inspiring journey

Dembla’s course is impressive and motivating to say the least. She’s proven that marriage, kids, battling a life-threatening disease, or even age has little to do with their dreams and goals. In the interview mentioned above, Dembla playfully mentioned how she came from a “khata peeta khandaan”, And was initially an obese mother with no purpose or passion in life. Then a turning point came in her life when she was diagnosed with blood clots in her brain. At the time, Dembla was scared and soon realized that just taking medicine would not be enough to redeem himself. As you can imagine, going to the gym at 35 was no easy task for her. Her weight induced low self-esteem and there were more than enough people to make her believe her life was over.

Dembla, however, took matters into his own hands and decided to change his life. Fairly quickly, she found her rhythm at the gym and began to fall in love with the process. “Eventually I started to make friends… the boys were helping me. I became passionate about training and lost 25 pounds. I was a happier person, ”she told the portal. Within a year, her dedication made her believe that she could run her own gym. Despite her husband’s resistance, she signed up for an online fitness program and began to prepare for the future she wanted to create for herself.

Dembla did it! She opened her own gym and managed to reconcile her dreams and her family life. Over time, it became so popular that Chiranjeevi’s son, Ram Charan, signed up. He then informed his famous friends about it, opening up new opportunities for Dembla. “I would train them in the morning and take care of my house in the evening,” she says. Today, the powerhouse is a force to be reckoned with in the business and proudly represents India at the World Championships!

To be something vs to be someone

The world is aware of the difficulty for Indian women to pursue a career in any field of sport, let alone bodybuilding, a space largely dominated by men. Breaking down these deeply rooted stereotypes, women like Dembla, Bani J, Shweta Rathore, Karuna Waghmare and others have proven that women are more than capable of shining in any field they think of.

Of course, it’s extremely difficult for every woman in India trying to explore her identity and be something more than the better half of someone. Today, Dembla dons the hat of motherhood while also being a successful bodybuilder and fitness trainer. She continues to run her own gym, where she has transformed many of them. She’s also a classical singer, DJ artist, vigorous mountaineer, and trained photographer. Phew!
